Volunteer of the Month – AJ Jimenez

Meet AJ Jimenez, a ten-time Mock Interviewer. As the Founder of Honesto.ai, AJ brings a sharp, people-first perspective to every mock interview round, helping Fellows not just prepare for interviews, but own their stories. A man in a suit and striped tie stands in front of a blue curtain, looking at the camera with a neutral expression.

His path to Braven runs through Cristo Rey and CareerSpring, organizations that shaped his journey and commitment to expanding access to opportunity. “I’ve seen firsthand what happens when someone is given access to opportunity, guidance, and belief early on,” he shares.

That experience is what drew him to Braven’s mission. “Braven focuses on unlocking potential, not just placing people into jobs. Many talented students don’t lack ability—they lack exposure, confidence, and access to the ‘unwritten rules.’ That’s something I had to figure out on my own,so being able to step in and shorten that learning curve for someone else is something I take seriously.”

AJ’s commitment is evident during Mock Interviews. “The most meaningful part has been seeing the moment where something clicks for a Fellow—when they realize they’re more capable than they thought. In mock interviews, especially, you can see the shift. At the beginning, there’s hesitation, uncertainty. But with the right questions and structure, they begin to own their story. That transformation, even in a short session, is powerful.”

Volunteering has also shaped how AJ approaches leadership and communication. “It’s made me more intentional about how I communicate and give feedback. You realize quickly that clarity matters. Structure matters. And the way you deliver feedback can either build someone up or shut them down.”

He’s also gained a deeper appreciation for Fellows’ resilience. “I’ve been reminded of how driven and resilient many of these Fellows are. A lot of them are navigating challenges behind the scenes and are still showing up. That perspective stays with you.”

His volunteer experience has reinforced his leadership philosophy: “Leadership is less about giving answers and more about asking the right questions… It’s also a reminder that opportunity isn’t evenly distributed, but potential is.” That perspective aligns with how he operates in his own work, helping to identify opportunities others  might otherwise miss.

His advice to Fellows is to not wait until you feel ready.  “Start before you feel confident. Ask questions even if you think they’re basic. And don’t let the opinions of people who aren’t where you want to be dictate your decisions. Most people are closer than they think—they just hesitate too long. Simple doesn’t mean easy, and persistence is what overcomes resistance… That’s where real progress happens.”

Thank you, AJ, for showing up ten times over with a genuine belief in what Braven Fellows can do and the support to help prepare them to succeed in interviews and beyond.
